What is it about cars that makes a man weak at the knees, salivate and willing to pour tonnes of moolah just to get one. The process repeat itself over the lifetime of this male species many times.
I honestly do not know what it is but I have a hypothesis (as usual) that I would like to share. In the stone age, a man is measured by the number of animals they can kill and feed the family in the caves. The better a man at hunting, the more desirable he is. He is perceived as a good provider thus has higher probability to get their women of choice.
In today's world, a man is measured against the same 'good provider' yardstick. Only this time, it is not the number of 'kerbau' he can provide but the buying power he has. Money is just a tool. If a man has a strong buying power, in theory, the spouse do not have to work hard for the rest of her life. This fact therefore makes him a more desirable candidate as a life partner.
It could be that male species buys nice cars to attract women with their buying power (not the car itself). This explains why some old uncle driving a Ferrari has a chun gf! LOL
As for me, I buy cars for their handling characteristics and horsepower. Looks come third in the order. I see women in the front seat as extra weight I have to carry thus reduces my power-to-weight ratio (no, I am not saying you are fat ladies!). ROFL!
